Welcome to week seven of the Careers in Psychology E-Course! While career options tend to be more limited at the undergraduate level, earning a graduate degree in psychology opens up a huge range of career opportunities. This week, learn more about some of the different things you can do with a graduate degree in psychology.

What Can You Do With a Graduate Degree in Psychology?

Earlier in this series we looked at a number of entry-level career options that are available to those with an undergraduate degree in psychology. When you think of becoming a psychologist, the reality is that many of those jobs actually require either a master's or doctorate degree. Learn more about what you can do with a graduate degree in psychology.

Should You Earn a Graduate Degree in Psychology?

While graduate school is a great choice for many people, it's not right for everyone. Before you make the commitment, there are a number of important factors you need to consider such as whether you have the time and resources to undertake the often arduous task of studying at the graduate level. Learn more about what you should think about before you earn a graduate degree in psychology.

How Long Will You Have to Go To School?

This is one of the biggest questions that students have. The answer is not exactly simple. The amount of time it takes you to earn your degree depends upon a multitude of factors including whether you attend school part-time or full-time and the specialty area you are going into. However, here are some basic guidelines for how long it will take to earn your degree.

What Can You Do With a Master's In Psychology?

Earning a master's degree is one option for students who want to go to graduate school, but don't necessarily want to complete a doctorate. So what kinds of jobs can you get with a master's degree. Your specialty area plays a major role, but so do factors such as the overall job market at your geographic location. Discover what options are available for careers with a master's in psychology.

Your Assignment: Is Grad School Right for You?

Now that you're armed with information about the different careers available at the graduate level, it is time once again to write in your career reflection journal. Does graduate study in psychology seem like a good choice for you? Obviously, if you are interested in a career such as clinical psychology or school psychology, going to graduate school is a given.

As always, your reflection journal is purely for your own purposes. There are no grades or assignments given in this class. While writing in your journal is not required, it is highly recommended.

As you write your reflection entry on this week's assignment, consider answering some of the following questions:

  • Which job areas did you find the most interesting from this week's readings.

  • How would earning a graduate degree in psychology help you achieve your goals?

  • If graduate school doesn't seem like a good option for you, what kinds of alternatives are you considering?

Congratulations on completing lesson seven of the psychology careers course! In our next lesson, we'll tackle a common question among students: how do you become a psychologist?
