Definition: Permissive parenting is one of the four types of parenting styles. First described by psychologist Diana Baumrind during the 1960s, this style of parenting is characterized by a lack of rules and little or no discipline. While these parents are very loving and nurturing, they often seem more like a friend to their child rather than a parental figure. Any rules that do exist are rarely or inconsistently enforced and parents who exhibit this parenting style often rely on bribes of snacks, toys or activities in order to get children to behave.
What are some of the main features of this parenting style? What effect does it have on children? Learn more in this overview of permissive parenting.
