When people think of psychotherapy, they often imagine a client seated on a couch talking to a therapist. While this is certainly one form of therapy, there are actually a wide variety of approaches. The type of therapy used may depend upon a number of factors including the background of the therapist, the type of problem being treated and the length of time the client wishes to remain in therapy. For example, if a client is coping with crisis situation such as a sudden death in the family, divorce or car accident, he or she might be interested in short-term therapy designed to focus solely on the problem at hand. In other cases, clients might benefit from group therapy sessions in which a therapist works with a group of individuals who can also share their experiences and advice with one another.
