Community psychology is a relatively young discipline within psychology that grew out of the need to understand how individuals relate to the society at large. While it shares similarities with other fields including cross-cultural psychology, sociology and social psychology, there are many things that make community psychology unique. This field is centered on taking immediate action to solve problems, improving the lives of individuals and society as a whole and empowering people within their communities.

According to the Society for Community Research and Action, Division 27 of the American Psychological Association, community psychologists "go beyond an individual focus and integrate social, cultural, economic, political, environmental, and international influences to promote positive change, health and empowerment at individual and systemic levels." Community psychologists work in a wide range of settings, often working as program directors, educators, researchers, consultants and public policy developers.
