The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders is published by the American Psychiatric Association and is used by mental health professionals for a variety of purposes. The manual contains a listing of psychiatric disorders, diagnostic codes, information on the prevalence of each disorder, and diagnostic criteria.
The DSM is non-theoretical and does not offer information on causes or treatments. The manual is often used in clinical practice, research, and educational purposes. The most current major update to the manual was published in 1994 and describes more than 250 mental disorders. Learn more about the DSM-IV and the classification of mental disorders.
