One of the central questions of child development is, "How does a child develop knowledge of the world?" In response, Jean Piaget argued that children are active participants in the growth of understanding.Piaget identified four stages of cognitive development:
- The sensorimotor stage (Birth to 2 years)
- The preoperational stage (Age 2 to 6)
- The concrete operational stage (Age 7 to 11)
- The formal operational stage (12 years and up)
